If you take the Claran road from Headford and drive straight for about two kilometers you will come to Killursa Church and graveyard on your right. If you are driving pull your car well in and enter through the gate that is never locked.

Standing  on the South bank of the Black River, just two miles West from the town of Headford the Franciscan Friary of Ross is recognised by many historians both past and present as the best preserved monastic ruin of its period in Ireland.

It was founded in 1349 by the then Archbishop of Tuam Dr. Malachy MacHugh, who was a native of the Headford area and a member of the Franciscan order.

Lough Corrib is the Republic of Ireland’s largest lake stretching over approx 41,600 acres. It is located in the west of Ireland and contains over 310 islands, the most famous of which is Inchagaoill, which contains 5th and 12th century ruins.

The fishing season stretches from mid february to late september each year. Headford is within easy reach of many piers on the shores of the Corrib - Greenfields Pier, Kilbeg Pier, Annaghkeen Pier are the most notible.
